Historical Overview

  • Early Years: Prior to 1970, vehicle registration responsibilities were handled by municipalities.
  • Transfer to Central Government: In 1970, the CVR was formed and placed under the Prime Minister’s Office.
  • Relocation: The registry was moved to the Old Shell House building in 1981.

Current Operations

  • National Network: The CVR operates through a network of 39 stations and offices across Zimbabwe.
  • Registration Services: The department is responsible for issuing:
    • Vehicle/vessel registration books and certificates (originals and duplicates)
    • Registration number plates (originals and replacements)
    • Personalized number plates
    • Duplicate third plates, validation certificates, and validation stickers
    • Vintage/classic car registration documents
    • Endorsements for Public Service Vehicle driver status and medicals
  • Confirmation Letters: The CVR also issues confirmation letters and letters of entitlement for genuine drivers license holders.
